Vancouver Sculpture Biennale. Not much comes to most peoples’ minds when I mention that name. First of all, what the hell is a Biennale and how do you pronounce it?

From Wikipedia, we take:

The name Biennale is Italian and means “every other year”, describing an event that happens every 2 years. The most important Biennale is an art exhibition that takes place for three months in Venice — the Venice Biennale — but there are numerous others…

Okay, I’m an art geek and I know about the Biennale as a result of various run-ins with the large sculptures in and around Vancouver. It looks to be a great project except for their recent postering campaign. What a huge waste of cash!

Someone even wrote “Lamest Art Display ever You lack talent and vision.”

The good thing is that it is private money that’s funding this but really, if I had a stake in it, I’d be pissed!

What am I talking about? Well, see for yourself (above), and tell me – what does this have to do with the sculptures you see around town?

That’s a damn shame; incredibly wasteful.

The art, on the other hand, is wonderful. The last one was the best, IMHO. I still love the “Chairs” sculpture on False Creek (is that Second Beach? Near the Burrard Bridge) and the displays they had at English Bay actually appeared to ripple as you rollerbladed by.
