May 23, 2006 – Vancouver, BC – Jeff Donnelly, the creative mind behind Denman Street Free House, Bimini’s Tap House, Granville Room, Library Square Public House (and new owner of Bar None Yaletown) is delighted to announce that Republic, his newest venture, and second food and beverage operation on the newly revitalized downtown Granville Street is about to open.
Located in part of a brand new block of buildings in the 900 block of Granville Street, Republic is a UK Style Gastro Bar that combines a progressive menu and innovative cocktail list, while providing a selection of standard fare with novel twists.
Executive Chef Cale Gault has created a menu that takes a progressive approach to pub fare and maintains the Donnelly Group’s culinary direction with the strong food program that is leading the way in all of their pubs, bars and lounges.
Head “Cocktailer� Jason Holmes, whose background includes The Elixir Bar at the Opus Hotel and Coast, has created the cocktail program, which combines some classics with more progressive house cocktails. The wine list, offering a selection both by the bottle and the glass, plays an important role in the food and beverage experience.
Donnelly Design Group has created a stunning 6,700 square foot, two-level venue that is designed to morph from one situation to another. Lighting, sound and atmosphere adjust as time, season and weather dictates – People set the mood.
The décor is modern and eclectic, yet comfortable and environmental with the functionality that makes it a great room to be in. The ground floor is open and spacious with a striking 16 foot back bar and eleven crystal chandeliers. Expansive walls feature changing photo murals. Electronic artwork and individual crystal chandeliers are a feature of the women’s washrooms.
Organic materials, coming from reclaimed Douglas Fir, are used for the tables. Wood paneling is throughout and the signature “Republic Chair�, produced by Ainsworth Custom Design, is as comfortable as it is stylish. A collection of Asian antiques are scattered throughout the two floors, some dating back to the Ming Dynasty.
Republic has partnered with Red Bull to create an independent photography series which will highlight the best in local photography. Each quarter, two artists will be featured by displaying 10 x 10 foot murals of their work on the expansive Republic walls.
The upper level, accessible by two large staircases and an elevator, features dark mahogany panels and warm lighting with a bar, dance floor and after work meeting place. A stunning element of the upper floor is the smaller room featuring a wall of garage style windows that open from floor to ceiling overlooking Granville Street. The room can be booked for private events, dinner parties and receptions.
Music and entertainment are an important part of Granville Street. At Republic recorded music will feature rock, synth-pop, electro, house, funk, soul and mash-up. Resident DJ Marlon J English will play modern disco and funk on Fridays and DJ Timeline will bring-in modern electronic and house music on Saturdays. Sundays are “Industry Night� with live funk and soul from the Socialytes. Flat screens on both levels are on for special occasions, major sports events and corporate displays for private bookings.
