Inagural WordPress Blog!

29 April, 2006 (13:42) | Technical

I got sick of hosting my blog on Plone using SimpleBlog. It’s not easy enough, not robust enough and not Web 2.0 enough. So I’ve switched to WordPress. One prerequisite is that this weblog could be stored on SSID’s server hardware rather than another provider. Something about ownership, location, uptime and availability.

I recall the nightmare that Lorraine Murphy suffered with Diary-X when their server decided to cannonball. I learned alot about their situation, the lack of redundancy and backups and the poor line of communication between the owner and the tech provider which was the crux of the issue. That doesn’t exist here at SSID. Clear communication for what expectations clients should have, a disaster recovery plan, redundancy, backups, multiple-city, country and continent hot sites are just some of the aspects of what we do to safeguard data, but I digress.

Getting WordPress up on a Windows 2003 Server has had it’s challenges. Firstly, the latest version of MySQL (the server software that stores all of the data from this blog) has a new hashing algorithm for authentication. WordPress, to my knowledge, doesn’t speak to the database this way, so you have to be cognizant of the issue.

Outside of that, the install was fast, seamless and Woot! I’m up and running.

The only other complaint is that mod_rewrite isn’t something readily available for Microsoft’s IIS so I’m forced to use a question mark in my permalink URLs for the time being.
Here it is folks, welcome to the new home of my blog at raj.jp.

Anything found before this post can also be found at my old blog. Everything after this post, well, it’s new!
