Celebrities, Vancouver Club Weekend

Great weekend – enjoying new things, seeing new people, having fun. Friday, went solo to celebrities after finishing work and Saturday, after doing a couple rounds around the seawall on my blades, went to the Vancouver Club for their black and white masquerade.

Friday night, I felt like going out, decided to check out the Coyote to go see Sammy but upon arrival, the place was dead. I had my obligatory drink and decided to head back downtown. I stopped up at Celebrities to see what the buzz was. It’s a nicely attired club. Great sound system, good DJ, friendly bartenders. Did I mention the video screens?

I was mostly solo at the club, met Anna Lilly and thought I might find some of my other friends there so in discussion with Anna, when I told her I was looking for some friends, she asked me if I was looking for established friends or ‘new friends’. She’s going to have to keep guessing on that one, I gather :)

After heading out of the club, decided that an evening isn’t complete without grease so I went to Denny’s. En route, found a couple of my friends, Tony and Sasha (Purple Onion, now working at the Blarney Stone), at the Subway. Came in and exchanged the regular banter and hellos and then went off to Denny’s. At Denny’s on the waitresses’ reccomendation, had the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich. Hit the spot.

Saturday, completed a ton of correspondence then decided it was time to get some real work done. Picked up my shoes from the cobbler and had lunch at Vera’s Burger Shack. A ‘natural’ (organic beef) burger with some roasted garlic, zuccinni and eggplant, a hint of mustard made for a unique burger. It was really good – the garlic was a unique addition, I’ll try to request that when I’m at Mos Burger in Japan next time I’m there to see how they take it (they’re pretty innovative out there..).

After getting my work done, I came home, tuned up the blades and went for a spin, in the interim, Frances came over and delivered my mask for tonight’s masquerade. I was planning on going to see Luciano at Act One (Act Two? I forget) during my blade but Frances pre-empted me and she brought a pretty nice couple masks so no complaints. I completed the seawall from Denman Stanley Park to Expo and decided that I wasn’t finished so I came back to Denman and did the seawall again out to Third Beach and then took the shortcut to Alberni. I needed that.

After my blade, came home and got ready. I only get to wear my white Valentino necktie every once in a while so I decided to wear that to the Black and White Masquerade. The decor at the Vancouver Club was great. I always enjoy these productions there. Last Tangerine Extravaganza was great as well. Frances and I met with Rob and Rich Zalaudek, Ali Solehdin amongst others and grabbed some sushi from the fresh sushi/sashimi bar on the third floor (UBC and SFU rooms). After enjoying that, and meeting a few more people, enjoying dessert and then travelling off to the second floor to dance, I got to witness Karaoke at the Vancovuer Club at it’s finest.

It seems that Bryan Adams’ Summer of 69 was just too good of a song for this fellow to pass up so he took it upon himself to vocalize his excitement over the evening. Glad to see he and his gang had fun. I think everyone had fun that night except for the sound guy who was having a hard time keeping up. Interestingly, on the first level of the club, Christina Sing and Freespank were playing as well. Small world as I was just lamenting over the fact that I missed their last show at Ginger Sixtytwo which featured Bobby James who I was more interested in seeing since I hear his work is really good (missed it, tho, at Thomas Lynch’s video launch party at Aqua)..

After the evening was over at the Vancouver Club I decided I was hungry (speaking of which, I wonder what the Vancouver Club does with their excess – they took alot of food away from the tables in an effort to pack up and it would be a shame if it was wasted), Marianne Kurvers accompanied (and more like suggested) to Frances and I that we go check out Truffles in Kits so we did. Unfortunately they didn’t have any food for the evening however, the Heineken was cold and tasty so I used it a a meal substitution. It also served well to get me into sleep mode which came shortly thereafter.
